Alibaba sets up AI research centre in Singapore.

Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba on Wednesday opened an artificial intelligence research institute in Singapore in partnership with a local university, as the battle to develop AI technology heats up. The institute, a tie-up with Nanyang Technological University (NTU), is Alibaba’s first joint research centre outside mainland China. It aims to develop cutting-edge AI technologies in areas such as elderly care and urban transport. The institute will carry out research on artificial intelligence technologies for an initial five years, starting with a pool of 50 researchers from both organisations, according to a joint press statement. Alibaba chief technology officer Jeff Zhang said the Singapore venture was part of research and development efforts by Alibaba’s DAMO Academy, which was launched last year. A focus of the institute will be on technologies to help in caring for the elderly, including developing robot companions to stay with them at home and sensors to help detect problems. “Using AI technologies, we can address fundamental societal challenges such as an ageing...

Mandatory exercise at the office, Sweden’s latest craze.

Mandatory exercise at the office, Sweden’s latest craze.

Workers spending their lunch break at the gym may be commonplace in most Western countries, but in Sweden some employers are pushing the idea even further, making on-the-job exercise compulsory. Every Friday, employees of fashion and sportswear retailer Bjorn Borg leave their desks at the company’s Stockholm headquarters to get their weekly workout at a nearby gym. There is no getting out of it: for more than two years the company founded by the Swedish tennis legend has made on-the-job exercise mandatory at the initiative of chief executive Henrik Bunge, a 44-year-old built like a wrestler. “If you don’t want to exercise or be a part of the company culture, you have to go,” says Bunge, without batting an eye. So far no one has quit because of the requirement, he adds. The main aims of the policy — shared by other firms such as city water company Kalmar Vatten and construction consultancy Rotpartner — are to boost productivity and profitability while fostering camaraderie...

Former CBN deputy governor declares for Nigerian presidency.

A former deputy governor of Nigeria’s central bank and former senior UN official Wednesday announced his intention to contest the Nigerian presidency in 2019. Kingsley Moghalu said he was moved to contest because of the “successive leadership failures of our civilian political class.” “With love for our country and a fierce commitment to a vision of rapid progress for our more than 180 million citizens, and following wide-ranging consultations, I offer myself to serve you as President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as from May 29, 2019,” Moghalu said at a press conference in Abuja. He did not state on which party’s platform he will be standing for election. However, Moghalu presented himself as an anti-elitist candidate ready to dispense with the status quo, which he said has stagnated the country. Neymar out ‘at least six weeks’ and to miss Real Madrid clash.

Neymar out ‘at least six weeks’ and to miss Real Madrid clash.

Paris Saint-Germain forward Neymar faces “at least six weeks” out with a fractured bone in his foot and will miss next week’s return leg of the Champions League last-16 tie against Real Madrid, his father said on Tuesday. “PSG know that they will not be able to count on Neymar for the upcoming matches: his treatment will last six to eight weeks, whether there is an operation or not,” Neymar senior told ESPN Brasil. The Brazilian star suffered the injury, as well as a twisted ankle, in an innocuous looking incident towards the end of Sunday’s 3-0 league victory over bitter rivals Marseille. PSG coach Unai Emery said earlier on Tuesday that “no decision” had been made regarding an operation, denying an earlier report in the Brazilian press that the world’s most expensive player would go under the knife to repair the cracked bone in his right foot. Brazilian newspaper Globo Esporte had claimed a decision had been reached for Neymar to undergo surgery,...

Wenger tightlipped on Arsenal future.

Wenger tightlipped on Arsenal future.

Arsene Wenger on Wednesday refused to confirm whether he will be in charge at Arsenal next season as he prepares for a match against Manchester City just days after their League Cup humiliation against Pep Guardiola’s team. The Frenchman has come under fire from Gunners fans since an abject display in Sunday’s 3-0 hammering at Wembley. Speaking at his pre-match press conference ahead of Thursday’s match against the Premier League leaders, Wenger said: “Does it stop you to sleep that my position is uncertain or certain? No. What is important in football is the game. All the rest makes headlines but it is not interesting. “I’m just amazed I’m always to answer things that are the same. I turned the whole world down to respect my contract.” On the Wembley defeat, Wenger said: “I’m quite amazed at how people analyse (the cup final) it looks like we lost against a team in division five — we lost against a team that dominates English football...

Van Gaal rules out Bayern return while Hoeness is president.

Van Gaal rules out Bayern return while Hoeness is president.

Louis van Gaal has ruled out returning to Bayern Munich and succeeding Jupp Heynckes — as long as Uli Hoeness remains club president. Bayern are 19 points clear in the Bundesliga table and in the hunt for the treble of European, German league and cup titles. However, Bayern’s current head coach Heynckes, 72, has repeatedly said he will quit at the end of the season. The search is on to replace him and Van Gaal, currently without a club, would be an obvious candidate. The 66-year-old has won 20 club titles in his career, most recently the 2016 FA Cup in a two-year stint at Manchester United. He coached Bayern from 2009-11, losing the 2010 Champions League final, but winning the Bundesliga and German Cup titles only to be sacked the following season. The Dutchman says he “loves” Bayern, but ruled out returning. “I have always gone back, whether it was to Barcelona, the national Dutch team, AZ Alkmaar, but returning to Bayern? – I can’t imagine...

Afghan president renews peace offer to Taliban.

Afghan President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani outlined a new peace map on Wednesday during an international meeting, which is aimed at finding negotiated settlement to the country’s lingering crisis. “The Afghan government offers peace talks to the Taliban without any preconditions,” Ghani told participants at the Kabul Process for Peace and Security Cooperation meeting. The Afghan president said the new measures for the peace and reconciliation efforts include a ceasefire, recognition of Taliban outfit as a political party, making efforts for a transitional trust building process as well as holding free and fair elections. “If we did not have the confidence and assurance that a peaceful and stable future is within our grasp, we might have lost the will to forge ahead in the face of such brutality that is being waged against our people,” Ghani said. However, the Afghan president noted the government was seeking “to strike a truthful and sustainable peace deal with conciliatory Taliban,” and the armed apposition who have had links...

Guardiola’s Man City a painful reminder of Arsenal’s past.

Guardiola’s Man City a painful reminder of Arsenal’s past.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger faces the might of Manchester City for the second time in five days on Thursday as the Gunners seek salvation after an abject display in losing the League Cup final 3-0. City’s victory on Sunday delivered the first trophy of the Pep Guardiola era and underlined the sense that the two clubs are on radically different trajectories. Guardiola’s men also enjoy a 13-point lead at the top of the Premier League and are virtually assured of their place in the Champions League quarter-finals, thanks to a 4-0 last-16, first-leg win in Basel. Arsenal, by contrast, face a huge challenge just to make it back into the Champions League next season. Sixth in the league, they trail north London rivals Tottenham Hotspur, in fourth place, by 10 points. Even the emergency route of a Champions League return via winning the Europa League looks a big ask after Arsenal were paired with Italian giants AC Milan in the last 16. What is galling...

Espanyol defeat sums up Real Madrid’s miserable campaign in La Liga.

Espanyol defeat sums up Real Madrid’s miserable campaign in La Liga.

Just when it looked like they had put their inconsistent form behind them, Zinedine Zidane's side suffered another setback with defeat in Barcelona This time last year, everything was going Real Madrid's way in La Liga. This season, however, is a different story and Tuesday night's late loss to Espanyol in Barcelona was a microcosm of Los Blancos' miserable campaign. In 2016-17, Zinedine Zidane's rotations worked perfectly as the second string stepped up to secure vital victories en route to the title. This term, without James Rodriguez and Alvaro Morata, the reserves have been unable to make the same impact. Last season, Sergio Ramos was heading home last-minute winners to earn dramatic late wins for Los Blancos. But at the RCDE Stadium on Tuesday, the Real Madrid skipper was sent down the pitch as an emergency centre-forward and instead of winning, Madrid lost it as he left space at the back which Gerard Moreno exploited to fire home right at the end. RELATED FIGO...
