Highly Sensitive Encrypted Email at Risk of Exposure

A newfound flaw in email clients that use PGP and S/MIME to encrypt messages can be exploited to expose the plain text of the missives, according to a paper published Monday. By injecting malicious snippets of text into encrypted messages, attackers can use the flaw to make the email client exfiltrate decrypted copies of the emails, explained the authors, a team of researchers from three European universities. Malicious action is triggered as soon as a recipient opens a single crafted email from an attacker, they wrote. The team is comprised of researchers from the Munster University of Applied Sciences and Ruhr University Bochum, both in Germany, and KU Leuven in the Netherlands. The software defect was found in 23 of 35 S/MIME clients and in 10 of 28 PGP clients tested. "While it is necessary to change the OpenPGP and S/MIME standards to fix these vulnerabilities, some clients had even more severe implementation flaws allowing straightforward exfiltration of the plaintext," the researchers wrote. Google pushes artificial intelligence for upgraded news app

Google pushes artificial intelligence for upgraded news app

For its updated news application, Google is doubling down on the use of artificial intelligence as part of an effort to weed our disinformation and help users get viewpoints beyond their own “filter bubble.” Google chief Sundar Pichai, who unveiled the updated Google News earlier this month, said the app now “surfaces the news you care about from trusted sources while still giving you a full range of perspectives on events.” It marks Google’s latest effort to be at the center of online news and includes a new push to help publishers get paid subscribers through the tech giant’s platform. According to product chief Trystan Upstill, the news app “uses the best of artificial intelligence to find the best of human intelligence — the great reporting done by journalists around the globe.” While the app will enable users to get “personalized” news, it will also include top stories for all readers, aiming to break the so-called filter bubble of information designed to reinforce people’s...

How to Back Up iPhone Data to an External Drive

How to Back Up iPhone Data to an External Drive

A recent incident reminded me of the importance of backing up one's phone regularly. Soon after carrying my recycling out to the curbside, I realized I had misplaced my 6-month-old iPhone. Cue brief panic, followed by deep concern that I'd somehow tossed my device into that transparent bag I'd left outside for the world to see. That led me to yelling "Hey, Siri" a few times around my apartment until the familiar chime sounded, revealing my trusty phone was hiding on a stepladder underneath a coat. Phew. I have no idea how or why I managed to leave my phone there, but had I not found it, the situation could have been much worse: It had been months since I'd backed up my data. I was lucky to escape what could have been a potential disaster caused by my absent-minded tendencies. Save Main Drive Space I bought my current laptop a little over a year ago and actually had some trouble managing backups at...

Know the Actual Difference between Analyse and Analyze.

Know the Actual Difference between Analyse and Analyze.

It often happens that language develops separately over time, geographical location, social class, etc. Once obvious example of this is UK English and US English. They sound the same, yet there are significant differences between some of the words, pronunciations, and the manner in which some of the words are used. Analyse and Analyze are two words that are an example of this. Analyse is primarily used in UK language, whereas Analyze is used in US English. The terms themselves are the same. In both instances, the words mean the same, i.e. to “examine (something) methodically and in detail, typically in order to explain and interpret it.” Both of them are verbs that refer to the act of examining or studying something in detail. The implication is always to understand the object that one is examining, so that they can interpret it or explain their purpose. For example: The doctor analyzed (or analysed) the wound. The implication being that the doctor is...

Intel Announced a New Coffee Lake 8th-Gen Chips CPU..

One could suggest that Intel had forgot how chips were made but suddenly the mighty company announced of new chips, H370, H310, Q370 and B360 chipsets, paving the way for much-needed cheaper motherboards for its Coffee Lake 8th-Gen CPUs. Intel's Coffee Lake CPUs have generally reviewed well, with their increased core counts, high frequencies and in many cases, extensive overclocking headroom, meaning that they're usually a match for AMD. The Core i7-8700K, for example, can out-fight AMD's eight-core CPUs in many tests, despite only having six cores. However, in the apparent rush to get the CPUs out the door to do battle with AMD, Intel only released one chipset - the high-end, enthusiast orientated Z370, to be used on compatible motherboards. Intel is releasing four new chipsets that will offer Coffee Lake compatibility at cheaper prices This posed a big problem and for two reasons. Firstly, motherboards that use the chipset typically cost at least $110, meaning that if you wanted to pair one with one...
